Recently, The South Jersey Press released an article announcing that Cape May, NJ, Mayor Zack Mullock, a Democrat, was considering a run against incumbent Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew in NJ-02. Now, about a week later, Mullock has officially launched his campaign.

Zack Mullock’s late entry to the race adds a new dynamic to the contest, positioning him as a fresh alternative on local leadership. Mullock’s biggest challenges will likely include Bayly Winder, convenience store manager Terri Reese, and Tim Alexander, who has previously mounted three unsuccessful campaigns against Van Drew.

In a crowded Democratic Primary for NJ-02, Mullock can draw on several advantages that set him apart from other candidates. As mayor of Cape May, he offers executive experience and a record of governing results, in contrast to candidates who have not previously held office. His campaign is also working to secure key support from influential South Jersey Democrats, including Amy Kennedy and State Senator Jim Beach, signaling that key party leaders view him as a serious contender

Zack Mullock began his political career in 2016, winning a seat on the Cape May City Council and establishing himself as a rising local leader. He later ran for mayor in 2020, defeating incumbent Clarence Lear by a margin of 842-530. Mullock continued his tenure with an uncontested reelection victory in 2024, further solidifying his position in city leadership.
