Cape May, NJ, Mayor Zack Mullock, a Democrat, is reportedly considering a run against incumbent Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew in NJ-02, a move that could set up a highly competitive Democratic primary.

Several candidates have already entered the race including Bayly Winder, convenience store manager Terri Reese, and Tim Alexander, who has previously mounted three unsuccessful campaigns. The potential entry of Mullock would further shake up a crowded field, as Democrats look to flip a district long considered competitive but recently challenging.

Zack Mullock began his political career in 2016, winning a seat on the Cape May City Council and establishing himself as a rising local leader. He later ran for mayor in 2020, defeating incumbent Clarence Lear by a margin of 842-530. Mullock continued his tenure with an uncontested reelection victory in 2024, further solidifying his position in city leadership.

Ultimately, Mullock remains relatively unknown outside Cape May County, and a congressional bid would require him to rapidly build name recognition across South Jersey. If he enters the race, his local experience would add another layer to an already crowded Democratic primary, highlighting both the opportunity and challenge Democrats face in NJ-02.
