Atlantic City, N.J. - Spirit Airlines, one of the only carriers into Atlantic City International Airport, is preparing to shut down following continued financial struggles and a failed government bailout.
According to sources with the Wall Street Journal, Spirit Airlines is preparing to shut down after the proposed $500 million government bailout failed. The airline has been unable to secure enough backing from bondholders and government officials to finalize the funding needed to stay in operation.

The collapse could deal a major blow to Atlantic City Intl. Airport (ACY), where Spirit Airlines serves as the primary carrier and operates the majority of departing flights. Because the airport relies heavily on Spirit’s route network and passenger volume, any disruption to operations would likely have an impact on the airport’s financial stability.
The South Jersey Press reached out to The South Jersey Transportation Authority, and received the following statement:
“Currently we have not received any notice from Spirit Airlines regarding service changes at the Atlantic City International Airport. We are aware of media reports, but we cannot confirm or comment on speculation”
